Biogeochemical (BGC) Sensors for Autonomous Profiling Floats

Bolt-on biogeochemical sensors are now available from Sea-Bird Scientific.

Profiling floats are providing unprecedented sampling of the global oceans through the international Argo program and others. With the maturation of float platforms, the opportunity to expand the array of floats to include biogeochemical properties has arrived.

Sea-Bird Scientific (comprised of Sea-Bird ElectronicsWET Labs, and Satlantic) now offers a full suite of sensor systems and platforms for profiling float-based biogeochemical (BGC) research. Bolt-on style BGC sensor systems for profiling floats were developed by Satlantic and WET Labs, in close coordination with key scientists. Headlined by the Bio-Optical Sensor Systems (BOSS), these systems offer various configurations of integrated multispectral radiometry, scattering, beam attenuation, chlorophyll and CDOM measurements to complement the temperature and salinity data of the floats. Individual sensors for UV nitrate (Deep SUNA) and optical oxygen (SBE 63 Optical Oxygen Sensor) are also available.

Scientific studies that will benefit from BGC sensors on floats include:

  • Impacts of climate change on biogeochemical distributions and ecosystem dynamics
  • Net community production / respiration and changes in community structure
  • Impacts of episodic / anthropogenic events on ecosystems and biogeochemical distributions
  • Phytoplankton bloom dynamics and the resulting flux of carbon
  • Improved ocean biogeochemical and ecosystem models
  • Validation and calibration of ocean color remote sensing data products

What should I use to lubricate bulkhead connectors?

WET Labs recommends keeping the connectors on your meter lubricated using a good quality silicone spray lubricant, such as 3M Silicone Spray or Loctite 8021 spray. These can be purchased at your local hardware store. Avoid silicone grease. It is messy and attracts contaminants. 

Do not use WD-40. It will destroy connectors.
